The ultimate version of Audi’s R8 is hardly a secret any more, but a few more details of the flagship model have emerged recently. Confirming our earlier news story, the V10 engine will be completely new and not related to the V10s in either the RS6 or the Lamborghini Gallardo. Instead it is essentially a development of the high-revving V8 from the RS4 and R8.

Engineers tell us that this new engine will shade BMW’s 500bhp M Power V10 – as found in the M5 and M6 – in terms of outright power and revs. Considering BMW’s figures, that means the new 5.2-litre engine should be good for around 520bhp and rev beyond 8250rpm.

We’ll have to wait a little longer than expected before we get to drive the V10 R8 though, as Audi has decided to delay its introduction due to the higher than expected demand for the current R8. We don’t expect the V10 version to be released until late in 2008, but from what we’re hearing, it should be worth the extra wait.

It’s not rumors! That’s some shots of new Audi R8 V10 powered version. Audi stated that the R8 will soon V10 production status after some initial fears that the project can only be cut by a total of heat problems.

Last week, the ever present Nurburgring experts Bridge to Gantry spotted the R8 V10 do some laps, today we have thank for some up-close-and-personal photos of this powered-beast V10.

The audiphiles among us will immediately spot the missing “fin” under the headlamps, while the rear is missing two of the horizontal fins. Far beyond the two larger exhaust pipes (instead of two dual exhaust) and the side air intakes balls have a greater need for the cooling of the engine.

The 2009 Audi R8 V10 has officially been spied.

The very first prototype of the v10 version of the Audi R8 was spotted on the Nürburgring & oh my do we like what we see!

The styling changes are quite evident & quite sexy as well. As of yet, we are not privy to the car’s final horsepower rating, but we’re expecting some explosive numbers to leak out in the following weeks.

Man, can you just imagine picking up your blind date in this beauty?!

The Audi R8 V10 was named as the 2010 World Performance Car at the World Car of the Year Awards ceremony at the New York Auto Show. This is the second time that the R8 has won the World Performance Car award: the V8-powered R8 took this award in 2008.

The World Car Awards jurors observed that: “In the opinion of many on the World Car Awards jury, Audi has at long last satisfied our hunger for a street car that lives up to the excitement of the original Le Mans series-dominating R8 LMP1 race car.”

Developed jointly with quattro GmbH, the Audi R8 V10 is powered by a 5.2 liter direct injection ten-cylinder engine which develops 386 kW (525 hp), enabling it to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 3.9 seconds and then to a top speed of 316 km/h (196.35 mph). It features Audi technologies such as quattro permanent all-wheel drive, a lightweight aluminum body and the innovative all-LED lights.

This is the second World Performance Car award win for the Audi R8: the original V8-powered version won the same award in 2008. Whether a customer chooses an R8 with a V8 or a V10 engine, they will get a World Performance Car award winner.

This is also the third Word Performance Car award for Audi in the five years that the award has been on offer: the RS 4 was named as the 2007 World Performance Car.

The truly global nature of the World Car jury is evidence that Audi is hitting the performance car sweet spot of car lovers around the world. [Source: Audi]
